Qualities of Didgeridoos

Didgeridoos are identified as having particular Characters, as well as characteristics, because they are perceived to be extensions or parts of the Spirit of the Tree from which they came. All of which renders them distinctive and useful for different purposes, such as healing, meditation-trance, ceremonial, dancing and musicality.

Larger Didgeridoos have been traditionally used for slower rhythms and Corroborrie, and are preferred for meditation or trance. While smaller Didgeridoos were used for a faster rhythm and are better suited to dance and story telling, having a greater range of expressive qualities. And all are special because of the artistic qualities which have been brought to them by the artist.

The Mananura group has been together for a number of years and during that times members have shared stories passed to them from parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents and visiting elders. Many of these stories are about animals who display certain characteristics.

For example, the Goanna (lizard) walks with chest out and head up, displaying pride, while the Turtle acts like a wise man - it can go beyond the land (and back to land). It takes its time and is not aggressive and returns home. A Kangaroo brings happiness, the Emu is fortunate - it has a good friend whom looks out for him. Platypus is everyone's friend; Dolphin is the same as the Kangaroo, happy, but in the water.

All our Didgeridoos come with the CD
(shown to the right->), of authentic Didgeridoo Music, including recorded lessons from Didgeridoo prodigy Simon Dutka, to help you learn how to play your new Didgeridoo

Our Process

All of our Didgeridoos, also known as Yidaki, Digeridoo, Dijeridoo and Didjeridu, are made from hardwood trees which have grown on Traditional Lands, have been cut by Aboriginal People in accordance with Traditional Laws, and have been shaped and painted into Didgeridoos by Aboriginal artists, applying designs which are derived from visionary experience and oral tradition.

ALL of our Didgeridoos are hand painted (or burnt`), we do not resort to the common practice of stencilling images onto Didgeridoos, and other modern mass production techniques.
It is our perception that the Spirit which lived as the Tree still lives in the Didgeridoo; and that the high art of Didgeridoo playing is to awaken that Spirit with your breath, and allow it to play the Didgeridoo with you.
The Designs which are painted on our Didgeridoos are Real Dreamtime Images of Beings and Realities which Exist and Live and Create in the World, even today.
